Owen Schuh

Owen Schuh draws his inspiration from mathematics and complex organic systems. In particular, he is fascinated by simple sets of well-defined rules that generate unexpectedly intricate and nuanced structures. His work is painstakingly created by hand, using at most the aid of a pocket calculator.
Owen was born in 1982, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He studied fine arts and philosophy at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, graduating with honors in 2004. He went on to receive his Masters of Fine Art from The Tyler School of Art in 2007, where he completed his final year of study in Rome, Italy. He has served as visiting professor of drawing and painting at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and lectured widely on algorithmic art practices. His work is included in the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. He currently resides in San Francisco, California, where he is an artist in residence at the artist collective “Root Division” and teaches afterschool classes in origami to underserved public elementary school students. When he is not consumed in researching and creating artwork, he is making origami or enjoying the outdoors.
