Violet Saylor, Sculptress was born in Summeeville, SC.

Saylor's sculpture called "A World of Confusion" was created from discarded plastic during the time when America was in turmoil.

"During the Civil Rights Movement there were riots, assassinations, and political unrest followed by the Vietnam war.

" The only way that I could deal with the sadness, hurt and pain was through art.
The sculpture was sitting in my living room collecting dust and all of a sudden the Pandemic hit, not once, not twice, but three times, in different stages. OMG, I am a senior citizen, I am at risk for getting the virus.

With that thought never leaving my mind, something else pops up. Now what?.Whats going on? I am now in my eighties.
Is this the retirement that I dreamed about while I was working? Absolutely not!.What in the world? Darts are flying everywhere non stop: Brutality, Murder , Protests. Political unrest, depression ,slow economy ,no economy. All I could do was pray. Then it came to me: the sculpture ! I immediately went into the living room retrieved it , carefully dusted it off, and thought to myself- A World of Confusion.
I was now on a mission to share my feelings about what what was going on in this world of endless turmoil but who would listen? Most would say "oh never mind that old bird, she's just flying off the coop."

My daughter Linda decided to share my art story with the Low Country Quarterly Arts Grants . They are the ears for the artists. They allow artists to speak ,to use their art to communicate, to use their art to inspire, to encourage others, and even use it to to heal with.

Well,, they listened to what I was saying , and what i wanted to do with my sculpture. I am very grateful to them for the resources they provided for me and for other Low Country Artists , giving us an opportunity to share our work with others.

"I rwally believe there is healing through art and I am asking others that are feeling down and depressed during these uncetain times to express themselves through art, or a hobby that they enjoy.
Other preservation efforts achieved by Violet include : her books : Know Your Bible Series : Bible Alphabets,Colors and Numbers and the Biography of Anna Ruth Williams Thurston. Thurston was the first African Amerucan to win the Colonial Stores essay contest in Summervllle. She purchased a home for her mother with her prize money.

Over twenty years ago, Saylor and her Committee members from the Alston Heritage Foundation had the first historic Marker erected in the town of Summerville honoring the history and legacy of Dr.J H. Alston.
Alston, a Black Physician , saved numerous lives during the flu pandemic of 1918. Alston used his earnings to open up the first graded school for African Americans in Summervillle -- Alson School. The historic Marker is located on Cedar and West Ist North s

treets. , which is the original location of the school. Now there are two schools in honor of Dr. Alston and they are both located next each other on Highway 78 in Summerville. They are named Alston Middle School and Alston Bailey Elementary School.
