My work's focus is archival large scale fine art abstract mixed media. I emphasize color and texture, sculpt off the panel, and use a wide variety of quality, archival materials and techniques. My inspiration drives me to continuously experiment, move in new directions, and evolve.
After my early childhood in North Carolina and Ohio I've spent most of my life in Wisconsin and Minnesota and am currently based in the Milwaukee area. Before delving into abstract mixed media I spent years with film photography and through this I learned to appreciate the play of light and color, the importance of composition, and believe it or not interesting aspects of working in 3 dimensions. I received my degree in Business from the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota however I knew before graduating that my desire was to create visual art. Not attracted to the corporate world I chose the road less traveled to pursue my passion. I want to create works which impact people ... make them feel, think, take action.
My current abstract work has been focused on the relationship of chaos and order. What causes something to look like a mess and what doesn't? Why do you follow the rules or why don't you? Are there any rules at all and if so who makes them and why? Through my abstract art I try to explore these and many more questions. I use a variety of materials found from hardware stores, craft stores, junk yards, and pretty much anywhere I can find something interesting and unique that will add a new texture or feel to my pieces. I like sculpt up off the wood panel using metal chains, washers, ball bearings, wire and much more to achieve this. I use squeeze bottles of acrylic paint, oil paint, spray paint, glues, charcoal sticks, alcohol inks, metal leaf, and more to explore the concepts of chaos, order, and their relationship in my work.
In general, I predominantly use painting knives when working with paints, but also incorporate a wide variety of brushes, paint rollers, pressurized air, and my hands as instruments to manipulate the materials. Some techniques I like to take advantage of are dirty knife painting, action painting, impasto, drawing in wet paint, splattering, and more. My style and techniques are always evolving and I strive to create new styles.
