Samantha Wall

In my work, I delve into female archetypes found within our collective stories, focusing on vilified figures such as ghosts, monsters, healers, and storytellers. The women in these stories defy traditional societal expectations and are consequently transformed into hybrid beings, made invisible or hyper-visible, and treated as outcasts. The stories reflect my experiences as a multiracial woman navigating a world that often alienates and exoticizes those perceived as Other. Through a fusion of East Asian mythology and Western storytelling traditions, my detailed and monochromatic drawings explore themes of hybridity, transformation, and feminine power. The figures within my works challenge the limitations imposed upon them that devalue their difference. They draw strength from their contradictions and reject the distorted narratives that would deny the complexity of their identities.
