Sara Slee Brown

I have always been an artist but I have not always made art. The second of four children, the oldest daughter of a doctor father and a painter mother in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I was a child of the Fifties: I love rock 'n roll and football. I went to college in my hometown, majored in art, and received a BFA in Painting from the University of Michigan. I married right out of college, had two children and supported my husband throughout his education. We lived in Richmond, VA, New Orleans, LA, and Ann Arbor, MI before finally settling in Iowa City, IA, a small mid-western town that appreciates and strongly supports the arts. I earned my MA and MFA in Painting from the University of Iowa. In my early fifties I was diagnosed with breast cancer and immediately had a mastectomy and a year of chemotherapy and radiation. I worked as a clerk and graphic designer at the pubic library for 20 years. Several years ago I left the library to fully focus on my art.

Originally I focused on creating still life digital pigment prints produced with my flatbed scanner. The power of this camera technique was amazing and soon I wanted to expand my world by combining these images with digital camera images. This created more ideas and possibilities which lead to my creating larger canvases. These are made by printing enlarged sections of the smaller digital pigment prints and glueing them onto the canvas to produce a large replica of my smaller print. When I am satisfied with the collaged canvas I brush on multiple coats of acrylic finish and varnish. This gives the finished pieces a lovely, lush, brushed matte finish which protects the work from damage and UV rays. The finished canvas somewhat resembles an oil painting.
