“Thread and fabrics are my paints. Instead of brushstrokes, I stitch.” These are the words of Sandra Lauterbach, a contemporary mixed media artist with a studio in Los Angeles.  Fabric is her medium of choice. Her family was in the textile business for over 4 generations—starting in the Austrian Hungarian Empire, then Poland and finally in Los Angeles. This may explain why fiber is her medium of choice.
After attending Pomona College where she studied art, she earned a JD degree at USC Law School. She eventually left the practice of law and focused on her art.  She has attended various art schools, including Otis College of Art and Design. 
The original use of fiber and textiles combined with careful details expressed in other mediums has led to Sandra's work being shown in national and international exhibitions as well as in museums and galleries across the country. Her work has been exhibited at the Textile Museum and the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., the International Museum of Art and Science, McAllen, TX, and the Whistler House Museum of Art, Lowell, MA. Her imaginative textile works have also been selected for three years for the Los Angeles Art Association’s Open Show—its signature exhibition juried by national museum curators and featuring the best in emerging art. Sandra is featured in the April 2017 issue of ArtMuzeo Magazine.
Sandra is an active member of both the Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art and the Los Angeles Art Association and exhibits at Gallery 825. She is a juried artist member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), an international body of professional artists. Women’s Caucus for Art and SAQA chose her to be a featured artist on their websites. In addition, her work has been published in numerous catalogues and books. She has also been a docent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
