Artist Statement:
In my career as an artist, I have had the honor of creating two significant public art pieces for the state of Oklahoma. In 2000, the state honored its firefighters with a memorial dedicated not only to Oklahoma’s fallen firefighters, but also to all paid and volunteer Oklahoma firefighters who have served since the state was founded in 1907. The result was “Just Another Day”, a twenty nine foot tall sculpture made of bronze, granite and steel, that depicts one firefighter saving another’s life. It is inscribed with the names of over fifteen thousand Oklahoma firefighters. In Spring of 2003, I had the opportunity to design and erect “Going Home”, a memorial honoring the 14 victims of the I40 Bridge collapse tragedy near Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. Currently, I am working with the Oklahoma City Fire Department to place “They Gave the Last Full Measure of Devotion”, a memorial sculpture dedicated to the fallen firefighters of the Oklahoma City Fire Department.
Through my involvement with these projects, I have gained experience working with architects, engineers (including civil engineers, and the Army Corps of Engineers), FEMA and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. I possess a clear understanding of the processes and personnel involved in public art installation, from concept and design to completion. I take pleasure in incorporating stakeholder input and creating an artistic manifestation of the concepts they wish to see in the design, resulting in a piece that embodies an aesthetic link with the architecture and landscape of the site.
I am a multimedia artist, with completed works in numerous materials such as stone, copper, steel, and bronze. I enjoy incorporating suitable materials to create a piece that exists in harmony with its environment
