Born in 1956, in Florida, Craig Sofaly dedicated his life to the arts from an early age. Polyvalent and prolific, he studied Fine Arts in the 1970s, where he specialized in sculpture and painting. Being a professional guitar player in parallel, he performed all along the American west coast with his rock band The Hi-Tops while exhibiting his art in diverse shows. After having lived in Idaho, Hawaii, and California, this American artist decided to move to France in the 1990s. In Paris, he joined avant-gardist artist squats and shared a studio in the Vincennes zoo with the painter Bruce Clarke, surrounded by caged lions. In the early 2000, he decided to begin an artistic break in order to entirely devote himself to musical creation. Fifteen years later, Craig Sofaly is now coming back to sculpture, his ultimate means of expression.
Inhabited by strange and dreamlike figures, Craig Sofaly's sculptures present the artist's critical vision of the world. His works engage a conversation on unfulfilled questions relating to politics and current affairs, two subjects which are endless sources of inspiration for his visual imagination. His technique, where collages and figures echoe themselves, is also unique. Sometimes sarcastic, sometimes engaged, Craig Sofaly's art leads its viewers into a sphere where the unusual subtly blends with poetic aesthetics, where consciousnesses are raised through "brut" surrealism and humor.
