Tehniyet Masood

Tehniyet Masood is an award winning Manhattan based artist. Originally from Pakistan, Masood grew up in Karachi in a creative home fashioned with custom built objects and furniture, these objects would become the early points of curiosity and influence. Masood would start painting at an early age and would later receive scholarships to paint at Bennington College and The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.With over 23 years of experience as a formally trained painter and sculptor, Tehniyet Masood has built large site specific art installations using an extensive range of materials and applications; the crossover of a sculptor and painter continues to influence her evolving body of work. Masood has created and exhibited work in Asia, Europe, United States and South America. Tehniyet Masood’s work has been reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Vernissage TV and other publications.
At Bennington College, Masood would make large paintings and build out structures from the walls creating a sense of depth and space. This practice would lay the groundwork for how she would build her latter site specific installations. In the winter of 1999, Masood would travel to Siberia to apprentice with renowned Russian sculptor Leonti Usov. Usov taught Masood the craft of chiseling until you find what is in the block of wood. This time would be an education in careful precision and an absolute devotion to a craft. In 2002 after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Bennington College, Masood would move to Chicago and secure a job with American Architect Thomas Beeby at HBRA Architects, during the job interview with Tom Beeby, Masood would show her painting portfolio and get the job as a non architect. Naturally drawn to building - her skills would develop in constructing scaled architectural models. Still continuing her studio practice in the evenings, Masood would be offered a Dean's Merit based full scholarship to paint at TheSchool of The Art Institute of Chicago and receive a Post Baccalaureate certificate in 2006. It is during this time that Masood would develop relationships with collectors that still continue to support the artist's work. Masood would exhibit her large paintings in her first solo show “Repeating Windows” at HothouseChicago curated by Russel Watson.
In 2006 Masood would relocate to New York City with a new job offer from Robert A. M. Stern Architects(RAMSA), where she continues to work as the Director of the Model Shop.

In 2010 Tehniyet Masood would be awarded as the inaugural artist for a large site specific Public Art installation in NYC curated by Project for Empty Space. Masood would continue to work with Project forEmpty space Co-Founders and Curators Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Jampol and build 6 site specific public art installations and murals for The Gateway Project and the Project for Empty space in Newark'sPenn Station. Additionally she would be invited by artist and curator Sanford Mirling to build a site specific installation at Collar Works in Troy NY as part of a larger show.
Her large experiential site specific installations draw from narrative storytelling with mixed media structures integrated with sound, music and video components. Movement, texture, color and nature inform the audience's experience.
Some common themes of exploration in the work are belonging, separation, identity, adversity, aspirations and the universal human experience. This would be demonstrated in her solo show Bluebirds at R.Jampol Projects in NYC. Masood would attend two international art residencies Proyecto Ace inArgentina, and Can Serrat in Spain. Both these opportunities would introduce her work to international curators and audiences.
In Argentina, Masood would work closely with renowned artist and curator Alicia Candiani. In Spain, Masood’s work would be introduced to Norwegian curator and painter Helle Kaaram. On both these residencies Masood would collaborate with other international artists particularly Argentine musician OrdyDe Juarez and Uruguayan actress Pilar Mato among others. Ordy De Juarez would continue to collaborate on multiple projects. The relationships developed during these residencies would continue to be a source of inspiration to draw from.
Some titles of Masood’s past and current projects - Repeating Windows, Grand Gestures, Chasing sunsets on a Racehorse, Prelude, Bluebirds, Longing, Grace, Oranges, Pocketful of dreams, Across the river, Chop Wood - Carry Water, and Four Seasons speak to deeply personal, yet relatable stories. They all touch upon the process of a journey, the complexity of emotion and constructing a site specific piece of art that is built with the purpose of being experienced in its full scale.
In 2019 Masood formed a namesake company in NYC. In addition to art commissions the company provides an offering of Masood’s signature line work designs on silk scarves. In 2021                                                                                                                
Tehniyet Masood received the New York City certification as a MWBE Minority Woman Owned Enterprise.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               
In 2021 Tehniyet Masood was the recipient of the EllevateHER Forward Fellowship. Additionally, Masood received her OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification in 2021. Currently she is working on a larger body of work titled “Four Seasons” - a collection of handcrafted pieces and products developed and produced during the pandemic in NYC. She is also developing a large piece titled “Chop Wood, Carry Water” at 10'X13'; this work displays the depth of her repertoire as an artist; some of the materials used are fabric, brass, wood, straw, gold leaf and glass.

In September 2021 Tehniyet Masood was the recipient of the Outstanding Women Award presented by the Women Builders Council in New York City.
