About the author

“And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” This is what I paint. In addition to being a painter, Lee Schiring is a musician and teacher. She is a former ballet accompanist, as well as a church organist. Color, shape, and form coalesce into a visual momentum driving the image as musical force drives a Bach Prelude—with the added fillip of jazz as played by John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, pushing Bach’s rhythms and harmonies. The work builds slowly, about three square inches a day. The artist spends her working hours crawling over bits of vegetation with a tiny brush, in pursuit of a cumulative resonance. Her work hangs in the homes of professors, accountants, and other professionals.
